Finger tips go numb
Numbness of the fingers is a fairly common occurrence among adults and children. This unpleasant condition can overtake a person at any time of the day. It is caused by temporary factors or serious chronic diseases. The reasons for which the tips of the fingers grow dumb relate to various spheres of human life and activity and need to be clarified.
Why are the tips of your fingers numb?
At the basis of the sudden numbness of the fingers are 3 main factors:
- damaged nerves that control the movements of the limbs;
- failure to transmit impulses along the nerve endings;
- vasospasm, impaired blood circulation.
Deterioration can occur at any time of the day. It all depends on what provokes pinching of the nerves or blood vessels. This may be an uncomfortable posture, but most often the discomfort is due to a disease that is closely related to the nervous or cardiovascular system.
What if there is such a symptom?
Depending on the factor that caused the numbness, preventive measures or treatment of the condition will be selected.
- Inconvenient posture. Pinching of the nerves and blood vessels can happen in a dream, if a person puts his hand under his head and stays in that position for a long time, when crossing his arms or sitting for a long time with a curved back. To get rid of the discomfort, it is enough to warm up a little, to do exercises - the blood circulation will resume.
- Pregnancy. In the second trimester and in the later periods, a woman may have edema, which is why the tips of her fingers become numb. If the problem worries too often, you should consult a doctor. As a treatment, a diet with a limited amount of salt and diuretic drugs can be prescribed.
- Reinforced work of the hands. The reason that the tips of the fingers on the right hand are numb can be muscle strain. People of certain specialties (pianists, drummers, programmers, drivers, motorcycle racer and others), where it is necessary to work for a long time, sifting fingers or straining wrists, can have stagnant blood circulation. For left-handers for the same reason, the tips of the fingers on the left hand are numb. Pinched nerve in the carpal tunnel is a frequent occurrence in those who spend a long time at the computer keyboard, knit or embroider. In this case, for prevention, it is recommended to do exercises every half hour, stretching your arms and hands to restore blood flow.
- Osteochondrosis. If a person has a salt deposit in the cervical vertebra, numbness of the limbs is not uncommon. In this case, the discomfort concerns not only the hands, but also the head, neck (there are migraines, drops in blood pressure). During treatment, one cannot do without special gymnastics aimed at relaxing the clamped muscles and releasing pinched nerve endings.
- Vascular occlusion. This is an emergency that is not common in medical practice. Numbness does not go away for a long time, gradually spreading to other parts of the body. If you do not immediately provide the patient with medical care, the condition can be fatal.
- Vascular spasms. If the discomfort in the area of the hands is accompanied by chills, the skin of the extremities becomes dry, lethargic, and blood circulation can be suspected. In the "glove" area, vasoconstriction occurs due to vasculitis, vegetative-vascular dystonia. Sometimes, as a result of a heart attack or stroke, blood circulation in the brain may be impaired. Disease treatment can only be prescribed by a doctor after appropriate diagnosis.
- Neuropathy. It is a process of pathological changes in the nerves. It develops on the basis of diabetes or a hereditary factor. In this disease, the following symptoms appear: atrophy of the muscles of the extremities, pain, tingling, and loss of sensation in the hands.
Among other diseases, due to which numbness of the extremities could develop, it is worth noting:
- avitaminosis;
- alcoholism;
- sclerosis;
- arthritis;
- intervertebral hernia;
- tunnel ulnar syndrome.
When we go to the doctor?
Although numbness of the fingers is a serious problem, it is not necessary to immediately run to the doctor, without first understanding the true causes of his development. And only when you realize that you yourself can not eliminate the discomfort, you should go to the hospital in such cases:
- the tips of the fingers on the hands go numb often and for no reason;
- a person ceases to distinguish between temperature differences in the environment;
- at the same time, vision deteriorates, unstable mental states appear;
- coordination of movement is disturbed;
- weakness, pain, inability to move.
You should not lose sight of this seemingly small, but in fact quite a serious symptom, like the loss of sensitivity of part of the upper limb brushes. If the tips of the fingers are numb, the reasons may require mandatory and urgent intervention. In some cases, timely treatment can save lives or significantly improve its quality.
