South american resident in our apartments - gloxinia

One of the representatives of tuberous perennials is gloxinia. This plant is very widespread in our country. However, his homeland are the countries of the South American continent.

Gloxinia belongs to the Gesneriyev family.

Like most indoor plants, and not only indoor plants, gloxinia is distinguished by its winter dormancy period.

Flowering occurs quite a long period of time, starting in mid-spring (this is about the middle - end of April) and ending in late autumn. Very interesting is the fact that there is another name for this plant. This is called siningii. Both the first and second names are given for a reason, and are associated with the names of the biologist Shining and the physician Gloxin.

Naturally, for our ear, the more familiar and often used in speech is the name “gloxinia”.

In natural conditions there are many species groups of this culture. So scientists have up to twenty-five species.

Another assumption about the name Gloxinia is a translation from the German phrase Der Gloke, which means "bell". And indeed, if you look closely at the plant during the flowering period, you and I can notice how gloxinia flowers look like our usual bell.

German experts in the field of biology, or rather botany, distinguish the so-called "scientific" gloxinia, as well as "horticultural." In addition, they introduced the concepts of "false gloxinia" and "real".

All gloxinia varieties currently available are divided into four large groups. This division is based on differences in gloxinia size.

So the first group of scientists include such varieties of plants that have the so-called standard parameters and reach a total diameter of twenty-five centimeters.

The second group consists of those varietal representatives, which are called compact and fit in sizes from twelve to twenty-five centimeters.

The third group consists of miniature gloxinia with a diameter of from five to twelve centimeters.

The most recent fourth group includes only miniature, less than five centimeters in diameter, gloxinia plants.

Use gloxinia

Gloxinia is most often used as a houseplant capable of adequately decorating a house or apartment with its presence.

As a rule, two varieties are used for these purposes, at least they are most common on the territory of our country - this is the royal and beautiful gloxinia.

Isn't it a very majestic name?

But how do these varietal groups, as well as all other representatives, called the proud name "gloxinia".

The appearance of gloxinia

Gloxinia endowed with large foliage. The leaf plate of the plant is wide, oval-shaped. The leaves are located on the cuttings, which can be very long or be slightly shortened.

The foliage looks interesting and beautiful due to the gentle cannon that is present on both sides of the leaf plate, both from the outside and from the inside. Thus, the gloxinia foliage resembles velvet and is very soft to the touch.

Sometimes, looking at the plant, we can observe small streaks of the leaf plate. However, they are not the usual reddish color for many plants, but a delicate silvery shade.

If the top of the foliage is a saturated green color, then the bottom is dominated by light green or red.

In fact, the degree of saturation of foliage with pigment depends on what kind of gloxinia you planted.

During the flowering period, gloxinia flowers of various shapes and sizes can be observed. Everything again depends on the varietal characteristics. Flowers can be presented in the form of a funnel or be tuber-like. Petals are usually fringed or terry.

Color variations of petals are different. Gloxinia flowers can be white, blue, red, purple, orange. That's just that the yellow and green flowers in this plant does not happen.

Peduncles can be high and be up to thirty centimeters in length, and can be shortened to five - two centimeters.

Planting gloxinia

Take a wide, spacious clay pots for planting. You can also use wooden boxes. The height of the tank under the landing should not be very large. The soil is suitable for weak acidity. It is best to prepare a mixture of leaf earth, peat and river sand, previously thoroughly sifted. If you buy a soil mix in a specialized store, you can use the same as for violets. In a container designed for planting gloxinia, place the drainage layer, and then prepared or purchased land. Everything can be planted. When planting tuber deepens only half of its size. Reproduction gloxinia occurs by seed, dividing a tuber or grafting.

Gloxinia care

Provide a moderate temperature plant, which can vary from plus ten to sixteen degrees.

Sanctification should be good. It is best to have the light slightly diffused. If the sun rays on a hot summer day begin to fall on the foliage of gloxinia, then burns cannot be avoided. Foliage is covered with characteristic yellow-brown spots. This is gloxinia burns, which appeared as a result of solar exposure.

Proper watering is a guarantee of normal, healthy vital activity of gloxinia.

Accordingly, you must provide abundant watering. Especially it concerns the periods of active growth and flowering plants. However, be careful that the water does not stagnate in the soil. Gloxinia is not an aquatic plant, and even though it is high in humidity, the plant loves it, but it will not tolerate an overabundance of moisture. Already starting in September, the abundance of watering can be gradually reduced. Comes a period of winter dormancy. Your gloxinia begins to fade, but these are all temporary processes. In the spring of young foliage and flowers will delight you again. Do not pour water on the foliage. It is better to water directly under the root. As for fertilizers, then, like any other indoor plant, gloxinia will not give up fertilizing. Fertilize the soil from April until August. This procedure is best carried out every week.
