Cabbage rightfully received the title of queen of vegetables, because without it you can not do. And this is not surprising - it contains a huge amount of valuable vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals, proteins. Cabbage is a useful, healing and nutritious product in any form - raw, stewed, sour. Of course, anyone can easily buy a head of cabbage in the store, but if you wish, you can grow it yourself, it is enough to have a small plot of land and desire.
Cabbage is a light-loving plant, loves moisture, cold-resistant, prefers a good fertile soil. It is worth remembering that at different times of the year there is a ripening of various varieties - late-ripening, mid-ripening, and also early ripening.
The most important thing is to clearly define exactly the time of sowing. Experienced gardeners know that the rise of seeds occurs approximately on day 4 or 5, after sowing. In that case, if the choice was made on the early varieties of cabbage, then from the moment of occurrence of the first sprouts to the subsequent transplantation into open ground, about 50 days should pass, for middle-aged varieties - about 40 days, and for late-ripening varieties - from 45 and up to 50 days.
In almost all cases, the sowing of early cabbage falls in the middle of March. In order for the harvest time to be slightly extended, the planting can stretch out for a few more weeks, while the interval between sowing should be about 3 days (not more).
Mid-season cabbage should be planted approximately in the 3rd part of April. In this case, the crops are carried out until the beginning of May, and the seedlings are grown in special boxes on the window sills, after which it will spike in the cold nursery. You can also choose the 2nd option - approximately at the beginning of May, cabbage seeds are sown directly in a cold seedling, but in this case you need additional soil cover with lutrasil.
In case of disembarkation of late-ripened cabbage, it is recommended to plant the seeds around the beginning of April, as well as early varieties. The seeds are sown directly in the boxes, after which the ready seedlings are swooped into the prepared cold seedling. In almost all cases, the pickling of seedlings is carried out after the plant has 3 or 4 full leaflets.
With the same purpose, planting cabbage seeds in boxes should be done a little sparse, so that over time there will be no need for additional thinning.
It is worth considering the fact that cabbage does not grow well on all types of soil, since it prefers only fertile or neutral. If seedlings are cultivated in boxes on window sills, then you should stop the choice on a special soil mixture - sand, turf ground and peat are mixed in equal amounts. In order to carry out soil disinfection, it is necessary to ignite the earth - simple boiling water or a solution of potassium permanganate 1% is poured into the tray.
Some gardeners prefer to add compost or humus to the ground. But to do this is not recommended, because as a result, the development of the disease of black cabbage can occur. In order to significantly increase the nutritional value of the soil, it is necessary to add wood ash (2 tbsp.), Superphosphate (1 tbsp. L.), Dolomite flour or chalk (1 tsp.) To 1 bucket of earth. The soil mixture is thoroughly mixed, after which it will have to be carefully rubbed with your hands or sieved.
Cauliflower seedlings: growing rules
Almost all types of cabbage are grown the same, but special attention should be paid specifically to the cauliflower. White-white can quite easily tolerate low temperatures, and there is no special influence on the quality of the future crop. However, if the cauliflower is grown in the presence of an unfavorable temperature, then there is a sharp decrease in yield, while the heads themselves will be loose and small. Unlike white cabbage, for cauliflower, the temperature regime should be about 6 or 8 degrees higher.
Throughout the entire period of growing the seedlings, it needs moderate watering, while it is necessary with great care to ensure that there is no strong waterlogging of the soil.
It is important to remember that seedlings need regular feeding, while the 1st one should be carried out about a week after the pick has been passed. For fertilizer in 1 liter of water it is necessary to dissolve superphosphate (4 g), ammonium nitrate (2 g), potash fertilizers (1 g). After 2 weeks, after the 1st, the 2nd dressing is carried out - a double dose of fertilizers is used. 1-2 days before the start of planting, the third dressing passes, which is also called "quenching" - superphosphate (4 g), ammonium nitrate (2 g), potash fertilizers (6-8 g) dissolve in 1 liter of water. It is due to the increase in the dosage of potassium there is a significant improvement in the survival rate of seedlings in the open field.
It is important to begin hardening the seedlings approximately 1.5 weeks before the start of their planting in open ground. At this time, it is necessary to adhere to a special mode - the seedlings should be regularly exposed to direct sunlight, the temperature should be about the same as outside (the only exception can be a period of frost).
Such a procedure should be carried out gradually - first, you can open the window for only a few hours. Then for the whole day the seedlings should be taken out on the balcony, with time it can be left for the whole day. A gradual reduction in irrigation begins, but it should be monitored to ensure that the seedlings do not fade. Approximately 1-2 days before the planned landing, a quenching dressing with an increased dose of potash fertilizers is carried out.
Thanks to such simple activities, cauliflower seedlings will receive a stronger root system, and 6 or 8 leaflets will appear on the stem by planting period, which will ensure a good survival rate in the open field.
How to grow an early cabbage: methods and terms
- When growing early cabbage, seed sowing should be carried out around March 20 (not later). The ideal option would be to sow the 1st lot on March 10, and the next one after 5 days. Following this scheme, it will be possible to plant 3 batches of seeds, therefore, ripening and harvesting will occur gradually.
- It is recommended to use fertile land with added chalk, ash, superphosphate, dolomite flour (1 tablespoon of these substances per 1 bucket of soil).
- Before planting seeds, the soil is treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate (1 g of substance per 10 liters of water). Now in the ground small grooves are made, the distance between which should be at least 3 cm. Between the seeds, a distance of at least 1 cm.
- In order to trap moisture in the soil, the container is covered with a special plastic lid or plastic wrap. Thanks to this technique, the first shoots will appear on day 3, after sowing. As soon as the seedlings grow 2 full leaf, you can add a little peat in the aisle.
- As soon as germination of seeds begins, the container retracts into a bright and cool place (temperature no higher than 8 degrees), otherwise the seedlings will quickly stretch. If the seedlings are grown on the balcony, it is important to ensure that it does not freeze during frosts.
Features of white seedlings
As soon as the first seedlings begin to germinate, it is necessary to observe a strict thermal regime, otherwise the seedlings will be weak and may die quickly. Watering should be moderate and only as needed.
Approximately 12 days later, as soon as the seedlings begin to appear 1st leaves, you can pick picking seedlings in a greenhouse or special peat pots. Thanks to this procedure and improved lighting, the root system is strengthened and much more seedlings will be taken when transplanted into open ground.
The seedlings are watered with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, after which you can begin the pick. Small indentations are made in the soil and plants are transplanted into the pits, while they must be deepened strictly up to the cotyledon leaves. You need to gently pinch long roots. Then the soil around the seedlings is slightly compacted and watering is carried out only as the soil dries out (the water temperature should be about 18-20 degrees).
After picking, the seedlings will grow very slowly, after about 12 days its growth will accelerate significantly. As soon as 4-5 full leaflets appear on the plants and the temperature is appropriate, it is possible to plant the cabbage in open ground.
Planting of seedlings should be carried out in the late afternoon, preferably in cloudy weather. First, shallow holes are made on the beds, some ash and fertilizer is poured in, they are mixed with the ground. Planted seedlings strictly to the level of 1 leaf. Watering should be regular, while it is impossible to allow strong drying of the soil, otherwise the cabbage may disappear.
Growing cabbage seedlings is easy. It is important to follow certain rules, take into account the temperature regime, the intensity of watering, make the necessary feeding. If you follow all the necessary tips, you will get an excellent harvest of cabbage of any kind from your own seedlings.
