At home, often sew curtains on the drawstring. However, more complex options are possible. If you wish, you can sew curtains on grommets by yourself.

Many people think that sewing curtains on grommets is a very time consuming process. In fact, the technique of execution is quite simple. You only need to master several stages of sewing a special ribbon, cutting holes and installing eyelets. Similar curtains are sewn in several stages. To begin, consider the most important, basic. Any errors at this stage lead to material damage or the manufacture of curtains not in size.

The curtains on the grommets differ from the usual ones in that they are fastened to the cornice with the help of special parts. They are made from plastic or metal. Grommets are usual round or figured - in the form of squares, rhombuses, etc. Often, models of such curtains provide "scallop". It rises above the installed grommets and covers the eaves.

We begin preparation for tailoring with model selection. For the first time it is worth staying on simple curtains with uniform folds. They will look like rectangles. After this, we proceed to the selection of the fabric of the desired texture and color. Consider the overall style of the interior. If the room is made in minimalism, then it is better to sew curtains monophonic. Also fit various geometric prints on the fabric.

It is better to abandon the frankly cheap materials. Agree, brilliant synthetics look much worse than noble cotton or flax. For classic interiors, you can choose jacquard fabrics, for rooms in the spirit of Provence - plain flax or cotton. Boho style "prefers" ethnic prints.

After we decided on the fabric, we take measurements. 2 measurements will be important - the width of the eaves and the length from it to the expected lower edge of the curtains. The size of the curtains will be calculated by the formulas. Width: the same measurement of the eaves multiplied by the coefficient of folds and add the allowances for bends on the sides. Height: measurement from the eaves to the probable bottom edge plus a "comb" over the eaves and hem allowances.

Let's start with the fold factor. It varies from 1.5 to 3. The more it is - the "lush" the curtains. For fabrics of medium thickness, which normally keep the shape, it will be fine. 2. Tulle is usually sewn with a factor of 3. The side allowances often amount to about 3 cm in ready-made form. This means that when cutting, it is necessary to add 2 times more. Bottom bends in long curtains 2 cm in finished form. We also multiply the value by 2. "Scallop" over the eaves - add 2-3 cm.

It turns out that if the eaves are 1.5 m, then the width of the cut should be 3.16 m. With a height of 2.6, we need to purchase a fabric of 2.66 m. Remember that natural fabrics shrink! This especially affects the length. Therefore, it is better to know in advance its percentage and make calculations. For example, linen and cotton curtains may, after washing, be reduced by 3-5%.

How to sew curtains on the grommet? After you have dealt with the necessary sizes of fabric, we proceed to the purchase of additional devices. Of course, we need eyelets. They should be purchased taking into account the diameter of the eaves and the overall design of the curtains. Also need a special tape. It is sold in any curtain salon or textile stores. Important note - there should be an even number of eyelets. Otherwise, the finished curtains do not be bent inward near the wall.

For a start, cut off the grommet. When bending the sides of the curtains, it should be placed under the fabric. Therefore, it is slightly smaller than the width of our fabric. For example, if in finished form the side cut is 3 cm, then the tape should be 12 cm shorter than the fabric on the sides.

Bend the top edge to the desired number, see. On top of it we pin the tape cut. Stitch it along the top edge so that the seam is located slightly above the fold level. After that we process the sides. To do this, bend the fabric 2 times. It should lie on top of the sewn tape, covering it. Sew on a few millimeters from the inner fold. We do the same on the other side.

Go to the installation eyelets. We take scissors with sharp tips and cut the fabric inside the sewn tape. After that we start to mount the grommets. To do this, reveal them - they consist of 2 parts. We impose one under the hole from the inside, and the other - from the upper side. The thread of the grommets must be inside the resulting hole. Connect both parts to a slight click. The remaining grommets are installed using the same method to the end of the curtains.

It remains only to process the bottom edge. To do this, you can first "try on" the curtain on the eaves. After that, extra cm of fabric is either trimmed or included in the hem. For processing the lower cut do the bend line iron. Then the fabric is once again bent and stitched en typewriter.

It happens that the store does not have a cringing tape. In this case, you have to get a dense fleece. The downside is that before you install the grommets on the curtains, you need to calculate their location. To do this, cut a piece of non-woven fabric. It is 6-8 cm longer than the grommets in width. The length, as in the last time, is calculated from the width of the cut fabric. We take into account that there should be an even number of eyelets.

Again, do the top hem, and then sew the non-woven thread to the inside out. It remains to calculate the distance between the grommets installed. On average, it varies from 15 to 23 cm. The greater the distance, the deeper the folds on the finished product. It is best to make calculations from the center of eyelets.

Then draw circles that will help cut the fabric. Combine the center of the grommet with marks. Draw a line (on the internal thread). After that, it remains for us to cut the holes and mount the grommets according to a principle already known. At the end of the hem again bottom.

As you can see, making curtains with eyelets is a relatively simple matter. However, there are several nuances:

  • If the fabric is too thin, it is better to make the hem of the top more. This will add extra stiffness. In addition, it will be easier for you to sew a grommet.
  • If you can not find the fabric of the right size, then try turning the cut over. It happens that the material with the desired side along the edge is not deformed if it is turned over. You can also be creative and sew curtains of several pieces. In lambrequins eyelets are mounted in the same way.
  • At home, it is preferable to use plastic eyelets. The thing is that when installing them, it is much easier to click on them than metal ones. For the latter may require a special press. On the grommets you can sew not only curtains, but also tulle. In this case, they can be transparent.

Curtains on the grommet with their own hands can become a real interior decoration. They are sewn very simply. The main thing is to make the right measurements and calculate the amount of fabric. Eyelets are installed on a special tape or fleece. They sew on top of the upper cut. Then the holes are cut into which the halves of the grommets are then installed.
