Do-it-yourself picture frames

Even in the interior, imbued with the spirit of minimalism, there is always room for several decorative elements. For example, a replica of a painting by a favorite artist or even the creation of a family member does not make the room visually heavy. But any picture needs a decent frame - a frame that will be the final touch, emphasizing its uniqueness and connecting it with the overall design idea of the room.

How to make a frame for a picture?

How to make a frame for a picture?

Personally, the frame for a picture is sometimes much easier to make than to order in a framing workshop. Firstly, it is not so financially burdensome, and, secondly, there is always a risk that even the most qualified master will not take into account all your ideas, and your vision with him will diverge at a certain moment. In addition, the process of such creativity is a great way to spend time with your family, if you connect children or other household members to it.

To decide how the frame for your chosen picture will look, from what materials to create it and in what form, you need to take into account 2 main points. The painting itself and the design of the room, in which the picture will later be located. Due to the fact that the picture is already quite a bright color spot, you should not make a frame discordant with it: its task is to shade, but not to put into the shadow what is written on the canvas. Therefore, it is desirable to give preference to monophonic variants, as well as not overloaded with small and complex details. If there is a pattern, then it should not stand out and change constantly. The same applies to the form - the simpler it is, the more universal.

The classic picture frame is a single-color frame around the perimeter, medium width and in neutral colors. Traditionally, such frames are made of wood or its imitation, but sometimes soft materials, such as fabric, are used. However, under it, in order to stiffen the whole structure, there must still be a certain framework. What it will be made of depends on what is more convenient for the master to work with, or what seems more appropriate for a particular instance.

For example, for small pictures placed in the children's bedroom, the frame can be made on the basis of cardboard covered with a cloth, inside which cotton or other filler is stuffed for the volume. In the case of large paintings for the living room, of course, the same technique will no longer work - here you need wood, plaster or metal.

Making a frame with your own hands from wood with glass

Working with wood at home requires a saw or a special machine (if the parts are large and thick, and there are a lot of them), a hammer and a special glue to join the pieces of wood. Means for the subsequent processing of products - varnish, paint, etc. - are selected optionally, depending on whether you plan to additionally draw the resulting frame, or you want to leave it in its natural form. And, of course, you can not do without a standard set of roulette, pencil and ruler. It is desirable that the latter is angular - it will be easier to make the necessary cuts on the details.

A long wooden lath of a pre-selected width is cut into 4 parts, where they are equal in pairs to each other. Their sizes are determined by the parameters of the picture for which the frame is being prepared. The inner edge of the tree will have to cover the canvas by 3-5 mm to prevent it from falling out. Or, if you are afraid of losing these 3-5 mm patterns, then the frame should be made with glass: in this case, a sheet of plywood and a sheet of glass are additionally prepared. The dimensions of the latter should be slightly smaller than the outer perimeter of the frame, as well as the size of the picture, so that its edges are fully aligned with the edges of the plywood, which will close the picture to the back. So, if your picture is 30 cm wide and 20 cm high, then the parameters for glass will be the same, and for plywood and the outer perimeter of the frame - 33 and 23 cm, respectively.

Under the glass on the inner surface of wooden slats, a recess is required: after a space of 3 cm from the outer edge to the inner edge, a flat platform is cut out, recessed by 2-4 mm (depending on the thickness of the glass and canvas). Then, for each rail, the vertex is cut by a saw at an angle set with a diagonally placed ruler - this will make it easy to join all parts into a single rectangle. Before gluing them, the combining points are treated with sandpaper. After that, the frame is set aside - the glue should dry completely, which can take up to 4 hours. If you have a special stapler for wood, they are recommended to strengthen the fixation of the wood between them, putting a few staples on the inside of the product. If necessary, you can make a decorative treatment of the frame - paint and varnish it, not forgetting to give each layer the opportunity to fully dry.

The next stage is a kind of sealing the picture. To do this, the frame is turned over face down, the canvas is laid clearly on the glass and carefully leveled. From above, it is advisable to make a press out of a thin sheet of cardboard, and on it should already be placed plywood, pre-cut to the size of the frame. It should be aligned with the edges of the wooden parts and not stand for them. If everything is correct with the dimensions, the frame around the perimeter is processed with glue, after which plywood is finally laid on it. In each of the corners, it is advisable to hammer in a small nail for better fixation of wood and plywood. This completes the creation of a wooden frame with glass for your picture.

Making a frame in the nursery

  • For children's paintings, as already mentioned, the frames may not be wooden, but soft. Volumetric options are easy to create with thin narrow wooden slats, a certain amount of fabric, as well as cotton or other filler. In addition, you will need a thick cardboard, ruler, pencil, scissors, needle and thread, tailor pins, glue gun. Initially, you need to prepare the frame - its role will be played by wooden slats, connected in a rectangle. Due to the fact that they will be within the framework, there is no need to worry about their appearance. You can impose their ends on each other, subsequently fixing the junction points with a glue gun or small short studs. As for the size, this form should also be slightly smaller on the inner edge than the perimeter of the picture itself.
  • Now, from a free sheet of cardboard, you need to cut a pattern of exactly the same frame, and then cut it into 4 parts: from the corners of the cut line, carry the center diagonally. The resulting pattern is transferred to the fabric, where its dimensions change slightly: you will need to add 1 cm from each edge to the seams, as well as increase the width of the fabric frame itself by 2 cm - because it will greatly increase in volume.
  • Each part is folded inward and sewn along the long side to make tubes that can be turned out and put on the frame frame. After that, the empty space in them is filled with cotton wool, scraps of fabric or other material. As soon as the desired density is achieved, the parts are sewn on the short sides, the seam is made secret, neat, since the work is being done on the front part. Threads need to try to lead away on the wrong side, which will fall on the picture. It will only remain to fix the frame with thick cardboard glued to it from behind, and the work on it has been completed.
  • In addition, you can make a frame for a picture with your own hands from a basic wooden blank that is purchased at any hobby goods store. It costs a penny, but you can decorate it so skillfully that no one would guess what the basis was. In addition to the usual painting of wood, decoupage is used, sticking-on with any small, inconspicuous materials (leaves, dried flowers), wrapping with cloth. And if you are interested in more non-standard frames, they can even be crocheted or knitted.
