In 1964, for the first time in Canada, one gardener discovered an unusual apple tree on his plot. There were practically no spreading branches on it, but it abounded with a huge amount of fruits. Since then, the world has learned about such a variety as a columnar apple. Planting and caring for such a fruit tree requires some knowledge and effort. We will talk about this today.

Celled apple trees: fruits of mutation

In our country, and more precisely in the expanses of the post-Soviet space, the columnar apple was first talked about in 1972. Thanks to the painstaking work of breeders, gardeners were able to grow various types of trees on their plots. The columnar apple has received such name because of a thin single trunk which practically has no escapes.

When growing apples of this type, it is necessary to take into account the climatic conditions. Unfortunately, our harsh winters do not allow gardeners to rejoice in the crop harvested from columnar apple trees bred in Canada or America. And in order for the apple tree to bear fruit for 10-15 years, one should not only take care of proper care for it, but also carefully select the variety. Our climate zone allows us to grow only winter-hardy varieties of columnar apple trees.

Proper care is the key to a rich harvest.

As has been said many times, apple trees of columnar varieties are an excellent solution for owners of small suburban areas. You can plant trees very compactly, while the seasonal harvest will certainly delight you with the quantity and quality of bulk apples.

Before we talk about the features of caring for the most popular varieties of apple trees in our region, I would like to draw attention to the general aspects of their planting:

  • Planting of seedlings is carried out necessarily in the spring. At the same time, it is necessary to preserve the crown bud, since these varieties do not produce lateral shoots.
  • To protect the apple seedlings from the cold, you need to choose a secluded corner in the area, protected from drafts.
  • The optimal distance between seedlings is 30-40 cm, and the interrow width is 100-225 cm.
  • The pit for planting trees must be deep, fertilizers must be used, for example, superphosphate or top dressing containing potassium.

Let's now talk more about the features of care for varieties that are most often grown in our area.

Apple "currency"

As already mentioned, the columnar Apple "Currency" is considered one of the most common varieties of fruit trees. Planting and caring for her have their own characteristics. Many gardeners prefer just such a sort of bulk apples, because the fruits ripen in late autumn and can be stored for a long time, until the early spring.

The first fruits of this apple tree will bring the next year after planting. Seedlings need to choose in proven nurseries. When transporting the root system, be sure to wrap it up with a damp cloth cut and polyethylene. The depth of the landing pit should completely cover the rhizome. To the tree stuck and quickly began to bear fruit, soil cover can be mulched and sprinkle with cereal.

It is in the first year that the apple tree of the described variety needs constant moistening. The optimal place for its growth is considered to be slightly shaded. If nature does not give us abundant rainfall, then you need to water yourself twice a week.

Any fertilizing with special fertilizers is recommended during the period from May to the beginning of fruiting. Be sure to harvest after harvesting. To get rid of unnecessary shoots is allowed only the next year after planting an apple tree. The barrel can not be touched: pruned shoots are subject exclusively. Perform such actions should be a special scheme.

In order to prevent rodents from damaging the apple bark during the cold season, the trunk should be wrapped. Some gardeners use fallen leaves as a natural fertilizer.

"Presidential" gifts

No less popular in our latitudes is considered the columnar apple "President". Planting and caring for it, of course, have their own characteristics, but they are not too different from the main aspects of growing other varieties of apple trees. Apples of this variety have a bright yellow color and sweet-sour taste.

Planting such seedlings will not cause difficulties even for novice gardeners. The main thing is that the soil completely covers the rhizome. As practice shows, such apple trees always take root, but they begin to bear fruit only for 5-6 years. Until then, a columnar apple with such a name will delight you with its fragrant and abundant flowering.

Before flowering the tree is recommended to spray with special means that will protect the flowers, fruits and leaves from pests. In spite of the fact that this tree is considered to be frost-resistant, it is necessary to take measures for warming. Feeding and watering should be carried out systematically, especially immediately after transplantation. Up to 12 kg of bulk and fragrant apples can be collected from a single tree of the “President” variety.

Of course, do not forget about cutting the shoots. Apple trees of the described varieties do not have a spreading crown, and the fruits ripen on small shoots that are located close to the trunk. The main kidney can not be cut. Experienced gardeners advise treating fresh sections with linseed oil. If you are just starting to grow columnar apple trees in your garden, then the scheme will help you to correct the right pruning.

Ostankino is not only a television tower

The name Ostankino, which is familiar to all of us, has a columnar apple tree, about which we now plan to plant and care. This variety of apple trees belongs to the class of semi-dwarf. The length of the young seedling does not exceed one meter, and then annually the tree is drawn out about 10 cm. A characteristic feature of such an apple tree is the location of the fruit. If you look closely, you can see that the flowers, and then the fruits are plentifully and densely on the trunk itself.

Harvesting with apple "Ostankino" can be over 15 years. Then it is recommended to perform the planting of new seedlings. Planting trees is carried out in the same way as previous varieties. But watering should be given special attention. Despite the unpretentiousness and frost resistance of trees, it is better to water the columnar apple trees of this variety with warm water in order to prevent overcooling of the rhizome.

Pay attention to top dressing: Ostankino apple trees will thank you with a high yield for systematic manure fertilizer. Trimming is done as needed. To do this, you can choose the classic scheme for removing shoots, but remember that the central or so-called crown-like kidney should not be affected.

To date, many gardeners prefer it is columnar varieties of apple trees. This is primarily due to their high yield and small size. With proper care, the apple trees of these varieties will long delight you with their tasty and fragrant harvest. I wish you success!
