One of the most common causes of treatment to a traumatologist is pain in the knees. Many people suffer from such a misfortune, but each may have their own reasons for the appearance of discomfort in this area. If your knee hurts when flexing and unbending, this may be a sign of a certain disease that requires therapy.
Why does knee ache when bending and straightening?
Joints play a major role in ensuring the physical activity of a person, and their treatment in medicine is especially important. More than others are prone to damage to the knee joint. His diseases have a different nature and a different course. Therefore, if the pain in a knee disturbs, it is not necessary to hurry with conclusions - it is better to see a doctor and undergo the necessary examinations.
Sometimes pain occurs as a result of injury, especially in athletes and people leading an active lifestyle. Perhaps you failed to set foot or landed on your foot in a jump - then with timely treatment the pain will soon subside. And perhaps this is the result of natural age-related changes in the body: very often the knee hurts in people of adolescence and old people when bending and straightening. Treatment should be chosen based on these factors, and only analyzing the symptoms, one can say how serious the disease is.
Very often, pain in the knee, especially when bending, is a consequence of the injury. The intensity and duration of the sensations depend on the degree of damage to the knee. It can be:
- dislocation of the joint or patella;
- bone fracture or fracture.
When minor injuries prescribe compresses, fixation of the joint (with a normal bandage or with the imposition of tires, gypsum), recreational gymnastics, physiotherapy. To exclude a fracture or bone fracture, an x-ray should be taken.
One of the most common diseases that cause knee pain is chronic joint inflammation - rheumatoid arthritis. The cause of its development can be mechanical wear of the tissues, trauma, but most often - an infection. People from 30 to 50 years old, especially women, usually suffer from this disease.
Arthritis is characterized by the defeat of two knees at once, and besides, pain is also possible in the area of other joints - the ankle, ankles, and hands. For patients characterized by stiffness of movements, mainly in the morning. You may also experience the following symptoms:
- weakness, muscle aches;
- temperature rise;
- loss of appetite;
- joint swelling, tenderness to palpation;
- crunch when moving.
A more accurate diagnosis will establish radiography. If you notice these symptoms, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible and start treatment to prevent possible complications. In a neglected state, arthritis can lead to a complete loss of mobility (the joint is eating away, and the bones merge with each other).
Osteoarthritis is a deformity of the articular planes resulting from the wear of cartilage tissue. Most older people suffer from this disease, the risk of its occurrence increases in those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Osteoarthritis can develop as a result of injury or permanent heavy physical exertion.
Very often, arthrosis is confused with arthritis, but these are completely different diseases. Their main difference is that arthritis affects the entire body as a whole, whereas arthritis affects only the joints. With arthritis, the general state of health worsens (after all, it is an inflammatory disease), and the joints hurt not only during movement, but also often at rest. For arthrosis is also characteristic:-
- knee pain when bending and straightening, squatting, lifting or descending from a ladder;
- symptoms appear, usually at the beginning of the movement or during prolonged exercise;
- pain in front of the knee, behind - a feeling of tightness;
- With the development of the disease, a crunch appears, the pain becomes constant, the joint swells up.
If you do not consult a specialist in time, this disease can also lead to disability.
Along with arthrosis, osteoporosis can be attributed to dystrophic processes. It develops as a result of a decrease in density and destruction of the structure of bone tissue. The symptom of this disease is also uncomfortable sensations when extending and bending the knees. Along with this are observed:
- pain in other joints;
- knee hurts more when squatting;
- tooth decay, frequent fractures (calcium deficiency).
The cause of pain in the knees can be a vascular disease. This is characteristic of adolescents who are not characterized by rapid vascular growth compared with the formation of bone tissue. They may feel a nagging pain in the two knees at once, but over time it will completely disappear.
However, more serious diseases can be found. This is atherosclerosis (deposition of cholesterol on the surface of the vessels, resulting in a decrease in their lumen until complete blockage), which may indicate numbness and pain of the entire limb. Phlebitis is also possible - inflammation of blood vessels. Its symptoms are fever, swelling, pain relief when lifting or, on the contrary, lowering the leg. These diseases require thorough diagnosis.
Pain in the knee can also occur if there are other, less common, diseases.
This, for example:
- Koenig disease - detachment of the cartilage area, with the result that aching pain, lameness, cramps;
- Perthes disease - impaired blood supply to the cartilage in one of the joints, which develops in children;
- cyst - a tumor in the knee area;
- bursitis - inflammation of the synovial sac, in which there is swelling and redness of the joint, an increase in temperature.
If you find that your knee hurts when flexing and stretching, do not self-medicate, but as soon as possible consult a doctor to determine the cause of the indisposition. Self-medication for pain and the use of ointments will only bring temporary relief, while the disease can progress and reach an irreversible stage. Professional treatment will not only relieve pain, but also help to avoid possible serious consequences.
