Instead of morning vigor, sometimes we may feel weakness and numbness of the upper limbs. Discomfort after a night's rest makes you wonder whether such an indisposition is not a signal of the appearance of the disease. If you are worried about the numbness of your hands at night, you need to determine the causes and immediately begin treating this ailment.
Why do your hands go numb?
Numbness of the hands in the medical dictionary is referred to as paresthesia. The list of reasons for its occurrence is quite extensive. In most cases, numbness of the extremities indicates unsafe changes in the body.
Among the causes of paresthesia of the right hand are the following:
- cervical osteochondrosis;
- intervertebral hernia;
- displacement of the vertebrae;
- arthritis of intervertebral joints.
Such pathological processes lead to squeezing and impairment of the nerve endings in the cervical spine, leading to the upper extremities.
Violation of vascular permeability (atherosclerosis)
Due to the narrowing of the arteries, the tissues are not sufficiently saturated with oxygen, and their sensitivity is limited.
Pathologies of the thyroid gland provoke blood circulation disorders, blocking the nerve endings of the hands.
Swelling in traumatic damage to bones, tissues, ligaments or tendons can very significantly squeeze the nerves and blood vessels.
Raynaud's syndrome (impaired microcirculation in limb tissues)
If the body does not receive vitamins of group B and the necessary trace elements, the nervous system may begin to function not quite correctly.
Polyneuropathy triggered by elevated levels of alcohol in the blood
With alcoholism, neurological abnormalities are inevitable, so even an extra glass of a drink "with degrees" at a party can cost you a sleepless night.
Tumors of various etiologies, increasing in volume, squeeze the nerves and blood vessels of the hands, causing a feeling of numbness.
Depending on the nature of the injury, the location of the tumor, the side where the nerve fibers are impaired or the blood circulation is impaired, the right or left arm becomes numb, and in the extensive pathological process both upper limbs become numb.
Causes of left hand numbness
In case of permanent numbness of the left hand, an examination should be started to avoid the development of the following diseases.
- Angina pectoris
In this heart disease, numbness of the left hand is felt in the area of the hand and shoulder, breathing is difficult.
- Myocardial infarction
Often the most severe heart attack, as a result of which a heart attack can happen, makes itself felt only by a strong numbness of the left hand.
- Brain stroke
Hemorrhage in the right hemisphere of the brain is usually accompanied by loss of sensitivity of the left arm and leg, as well as impaired vision and speech.
In which cases there is no cause for concern?
Sometimes the numbness of hands in the dark can be quite easily solvable problem. Hands may bleed because of:
- unsuccessful posture during sleep;
- tight clothes;
- physical overload of the hands (usually the right hand);
- of pregnancy.
All lovers throw their hands behind their heads, hang them out of bed, press them down with body weight and get rid of such bad habits. An inconvenient mattress and too high a pillow also do not favor good blood circulation, and tight pajamas that clamp hands, instead of a beautiful look, can give you a lot of unpleasant feelings.
In the course of daily manual work, microtraumas, sprains and tendons, especially of the right hand, also occur. So analyze how much time you spend at the computer, knitting, writing and other activities that require stress brushes. If a programmer or an accountant after a busy day feels a slight numbness of the fingers, the causes of this condition are fatigue, a sedentary lifestyle, and treatment, apart from exercise, is not required for such a patient.
Paresthesia in future mothers
Numbness of the hands during pregnancy is noted as often as back pain and heaviness of the abdomen. But paresthesia cannot arise in an interesting position on its own - there is always the main reason:
- the appearance of excess weight;
- exacerbation of chronic diseases;
- iron deficiency in the body;
- natural fetal growth.
Future moms who complain of hand numbness need to consume less fluid and salt, eat rationally, take vitamins and minerals, and also regularly visit the doctor to avoid aggravation of diseases.
How to get rid of the problem?
When the flow of hands is accompanied by other symptoms, it is an alarming signal. You may suffer:
- pain in the hands;
- muscle weakness;
- discomfort in the sternum;
- general deterioration of health.
When contacting the clinic with such complaints do not refuse to conduct:
- X-ray studies of the spine;
- Ultrasound of the vessels of the arms and legs, the thyroid gland;
- various laboratory tests.
The results of the examinations will help the doctor to establish an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate therapy, because the numbness of the arms and legs at night can be quite diverse, and the treatment is prescribed individually - there are no general prescriptions for paresthesia.
So, in osteochondrosis, the patient is recommended to visit physiotherapy rooms, a masseuse and an osteopath. Circulatory disorders of various etiologies are treated with vasodilators, polyneuropathy with drugs that improve the transmission of nerve impulses, vitamins of group B. After injury, anti-inflammatory and diuretic drugs should be taken; anemia and vitamin deficiency pass after taking vitamins and minerals. In some more serious cases (tumors, intervertebral hernia), surgical intervention is indicated.
If it turned out that the reason for paresthesia lies only in physical exertion and an uncomfortable bed, remember a few simple rules:
- take breaks during work for massage and gymnastics of hands;
- sleep on a smooth mattress and pillow no more than 10 cm high;
- Do not give your hands an uncomfortable position during sleep;
- nightwear should be loose and soft.
If numbness of the hands appeared at night, narrow specialists should deal with the causes and treatment of this condition. The patient needs to list all the associated symptoms so that the doctor can prescribe the laboratory tests that are necessary in his case. There is no reason for panic: paresthesia responds well to treatment, the main thing is not to start the process, frivolously losing precious time.
