During the annual preventive examination, each of us is confronted with such a diagnostic method as fluorography. As a rule, this study is conducted once a year. Many people believe that fluorography has a negative effect on the body. Are such concerns justified? How often can x-ray be done? Are there any contraindications for such a diagnosis? Let's look at these issues.
How often can x-ray be done?
To answer the question of how often x-ray can be done, it is necessary to figure out what the essence of this diagnostic technique is and when it needs to be done. In fact, fluorography is X-rays, with which you can determine the pathology of the chest organs. We all used to think that X-rays are very harmful and should be done no more than once a year. Is it so?
X-rays are a type of radiation, and, of course, during the passage of fluorography, the human body is subjected to a small dose of radiation. However, this should not be feared, since the average dose of radiation entering the body is rather small. So, thanks to modern equipment with the passage of fluorography, the average dose of radiation is 2.3 R. And 5 P per year is considered an absolutely harmless dose for humans. As you can see, you can safely undergo fluorography 2 times a year.
As is known, fluorography primarily reveals the development of tuberculosis. This is a very insidious disease that is not so easy to cure. Unfortunately, in recent years, the number of people infected with tuberculosis has been steadily increasing. In order to prevent this pathology, everyone must necessarily undergo fluorography once every 12 months.
But for people at risk, fluorography is recommended to take place 2 times a year. These include:
- people with respiratory diseases of a chronic nature;
- persons released from prison;
- workers of medical organizations: polyclinics, sanatoriums, dispensaries, maternity hospitals and especially tuberculosis clinics;
- persons in whose family there were cases of tuberculosis.
Also, indications for fluorography more often than once a year are the following diseases:
- diabetes of any form;
- ulcerative changes in the digestive tract;
- asthma of bronchial nature.
For unscheduled fluorography, regardless of when the person underwent the previous diagnosis, the attending specialists send patients with such pronounced symptoms as:
- persistent cough, not curable;
- body temperature above 37 degrees for a long time;
- shortness of breath, lethargy, chronic fatigue.
If you suspect the development of a tumor of a malignant or benign nature in the chest or lungs, the person immediately goes to x-rays. Unplanned diagnostics also include young people who are drafted into the army.
Is fluorography allowed for pregnant women and children?
Despite the relative safety of fluorography, there are certain contraindications to its passage. First of all, such a diagnosis is contraindicated in children under 15 years of age. This is due to the fact that the children's body is more susceptible to the effects of radiation. However, if a child has a severe pathology of the chest, for example, tuberculosis, then fluorography cannot be avoided. In this case, you need to consult with the attending specialist, who will give recommendations on how to minimize the possible consequences of passing the diagnosis to a minimum.
For women carrying a child, fluorography is strictly prohibited. Even in cases where there are serious indications for this type of research, it is not carried out for a period of less than 25 weeks, as this can lead to serious pathologies in the development of the baby. It is possible to pass the examination only after the specified period, since during this period all the systems of the baby’s organs have already been laid, and the fluorography will not harm him. But for mothers who are breastfeeding their babies, fluorography is not contraindicated, such a procedure will not affect the quality of breast milk.
Taking care of your health is necessary, and various methods of examination allow you to identify any disease at an early stage and stop it in time. Do not be afraid of fluorography, because spending a lot of time at the computer, we get much more harm than when passing this diagnosis. In any case, only the doctor must decide how often chest x-rays can be done, based on individual indicators and the state of human health. Be healthy!
