How is bladder ultrasound done in women and men

Medical equipment helps to identify serious diseases in time and take the necessary measures to restore health to a person. The simplest and safest diagnostic method is ultrasound. To use this method to identify pathologies of the genitourinary system, you need to know how to do ultrasound of the bladder.

A urologist or gynecologist directs to undergo ultrasound diagnosis of patients who complain about:

How is an ultrasound of the bladder

  • frequent, painful and difficult urination;
  • feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder;
  • urinary incontinence;
  • presence of bloody impurities in the liquid;
  • pain in the lower abdomen.

Do not do without ultrasound and assumptions about the development of urinary or kidney stones, vesicoureteral reflux, pathologies of female and male genital organs.

What to expect those who signed up for ultrasound?

In some cases, the procedure depends on the gender of the patient. Ultrasound provides an opportunity to measure and determine the structure, location, shape of the organs of the female reproductive sphere - the uterus and ovaries. During the examination of the representatives of the stronger sex may need to examine the prostate. Therefore, men are often prescribed ultrasound of the bladder with the determination of residual urine (first inspect the filled organ, and then repeat the inspection after urination - measure the amount of urine that remained inside).

3 ways to conduct a urea ultrasound

There are 3 ways to carry out an ultrasound of the urea:

  • transabdominal (study is carried out from the outside of the peritoneum);
  • transurethral (sensor is inserted into the urinary canal to determine the degree of urethra infestation);
  • transrectal (the rectum becomes the way to enter the organ under study);
  • transvaginal (insertion of the vaginal sensor to a small depth in the vagina).

Most often, the bladder is examined from the outside - in this case there are no differences relating to the sex of the person. But if they suspect problems related to the functioning of the reproductive organs, doctors, knowing how to do an ultrasound of the bladder in women, recommend a transvaginal way for women and transrectal ultrasound for men. The transurethral diagnostic method is prescribed in extreme cases when other methods have proved ineffective, since they require anesthesia and are associated with the risk of damage to the urethra.

The ultrasound procedure is performed as follows:

-
  1. The patient is placed on a couch or a special chair.
  2. The study area - external or internal - is covered with a water-soluble gel, which improves the conductivity of ultrasonic waves and prevents air from entering between the part of the equipment and the skin or mucous membrane.
  3. On the body or mucous membrane slides tightly pressed sensor.
  4. The patient must remain motionless in order not to impair visualization.
  5. The doctor may ask the patient not to breathe for a few seconds to increase the clarity of the image.
  6. At the end of the procedure, the gel is removed with a napkin.

Proper preparation - a reliable result.

Preparing for a bladder ultrasound is necessary

Preparing for a bladder ultrasound is necessary, otherwise the results will be distorted. To determine the wall thickness, shape and contours of the body, it is necessary to examine it in its completed form and not to forget about preliminary measures:

  • 2 hours before the procedure, drink tea, compote, non-carbonated water so that the volume of liquid is 2 liters;
  • if you do not want to drink something, do not empty it for 5-6 hours before the start of the study;
  • for a transrectal examination on the eve of the procedure or a few hours before it, do a cleansing enema and do not have breakfast before visiting the diagnostic room.

It can be difficult for a person to hold urine. But there is a solution: you can partially empty it, and 2 hours before the procedure, drink more than a liter of water.

If the patient needs a transvaginal or transurethral examination, the following diet should be followed for three days before the ultrasound diagnosis:

  • eat every 3-4 hours no more than 5 times a day;
  • The last meal should take place no earlier than 6 hours before the procedure;
  • drink at least 1.5 liters of purified water or unsweetened non-concentrated tea per day;
  • include chicken and beef, low-fat cheese and fish, hard-boiled eggs, cereals, cooked in water;
  • exclude from the menu, raw vegetables and fruits, bakery products, fatty foods, milk, beans, sweets and coffee;
  • turn out to be bad habits.

Ultrasound of the bladder is carried out in women carrying a child, as well as during menstruation. Perhaps, in this case, you just have to choose another examination technique and ask the doctor how to prepare for it.

For discomfort in the urinary organs, the doctor may assign a bladder ultrasound to both women and men. There are several options for answering the question of how this procedure is done. But provided that a qualified specialist is contacted and conscientiously prepared for the examination, in any case, the ultrasound scan will be painless and will help to establish an accurate diagnosis.
