Probably only the laziest people in life never clicked the joints of the fingers. Those who use this method of relaxation, certainly listened from the grandmothers predictions about the development of arthritis, if you do not stop to engage in nonsense. What to do when the joints crackle all over the body, what are the causes of this condition, is pathology possible? Let's try to figure it out.
What does creak and crack in the joints mean?
Each joint is held by a complex set of ligaments, tendons and muscles. The traditional explanation of why the joints click is the change in pressure of the synovial fluid inside the articulation. This difference occurs when the joint capsule is deformed - a closed system filled with fluid.
Bubbles form and quickly disintegrate with characteristic sound. That is why we can not crunch fingers twice in a row, but it takes about twenty minutes to restore balance in the liquid. As for the other sounds, they can make a damaged connective tissue.
There are such reasons that lead to a crunch in the joints all over the body:
- production of bone joints;
- salt accumulation in the joints caused by malnutrition, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol abuse, and commitment to drugs;
- joint injury;
- violations in the structure;
- inflammatory processes in the adductor muscles;
- genetic predisposition.
We determine whether or not there are characteristic sounds when pressing on the elbow. If there is discomfort and the elbow is stuck in a bent state, then this may indicate problems with cartilage. The crunch, accompanied by numbness in the little finger and ring finger indicates the manifestation of squeezed ulnar nerve syndrome in the cubital canal.
The clicking sounds in the shoulder joint should be considered according to age. Up to 35 years old this may indicate instability of the joint. When moving, the rounded part of the bone somewhat comes out of the shoulder socket, which is accompanied by a loud bang.
In older people, if, when pressing on the joint, a crunch and pain appear, especially in the case when the arms are above the head or behind the back, this speaks of the syndrome of the impact of the large tubercle of the humerus and the scapula, acromion. At the same time, there is also an inflammation of the tendons. In this case, the pain causes any movement of the shoulder. Most likely, this is a manifestation of arthritis.
The loudest sound a joint can make is the rupture of the Achilles tendons. But often there is no noise, but only after a moment there is a feeling of hotness in the back of the heel. Injuries from jerks can damage the tendons from the outside. Their result will be clicks every time you move your ankle. Sprains are characterized by a clapping sound during rotation of the ankle joint.
Experts refute the opinion that when a person crunches the knuckles of the fingers, it leads to arthritis. Studies show that joints for lovers of clicking on them are no more prone to arthritis than people who have never done this.
The most common noise is the creaking while bending the thumb in the direction of the palm. Sound accompanied by sharp pain is a sign of arthritis. Bones rub against each other when the cartilage is frayed.
Clicking in the hip joint is one of the most common complaints, especially among young women. Such a phenomenon is rarely accompanied by pain and does not cause concern. But in the case of pain, you can talk about normal wear and tear or the onset of arthritis, so you need to control the doctor.
During squats, especially deep ones, the knee joint has a load of 7-8 more than body weight. And if the process is accompanied by an additional load, the connective tissue begins to protest, there are crackles and clicks.
If there are painful sensations, then problems with cartilage are possible. With the inconstancy of the crunch there is a reason to talk about age-related changes: when the cartilage wears out, the bones begin to rub against each other. Also, a crunch accompanied by pain may indicate the presence of inflammatory or dystrophic changes characteristic of arthrosis.
Some people have a cracking jaw. The reason may be subluxation, when the head is displaced from the articular bag and returns to its place. If this is accompanied by pain, it may indicate the presence of dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint.
What to do?
The question of what to do if once there was a crunch of joints in the knees, clicks or creaks in any other joints, can stand in front of any person. The answer will be unequivocal: if there is pain, you need to go to the doctor’s appointment.
The doctor will interview, conduct the necessary research, prescribe therapy. In some cases, it will be sufficient to reduce the loads on the joint and the use of physiotherapy, in others it may be necessary to inject steroids, surgery, or even to install the prosthesis.
For the most part, the presence of sounds in the joints when moving is normal, but as long as there is no pain. The desire to stretch or crunch your fingers should be limited to common sense. Even if this action causes pleasant sensations, it is not a good idea to try to constantly reproduce it. Sounds can vary depending on the exercise and the amount of exercise. You need to monitor the reaction of your body, most importantly, do not overdo it. If pain occurs, then a doctor is needed. Do not be ill!
