For the treatment of children often prescribed antibiotics. Pharmaceutical companies are trying to facilitate the process of antibiotic therapy for young patients and their parents. Thus, a special dosage form in which the popular antibiotic azithromycin for children is produced is a suspension. How to cook it, how much to give and what to fear?
Why do pediatricians like to prescribe Azithromycin for children?
This drug belongs to the third generation of macrolide antibiotics. He comes to the rescue if penicillins are powerless against harmful bacteria. Its main active ingredient is azithromycin.
The antibiotic demonstrates high efficacy against a wide range of pathological microorganisms, including staphylococci. This is the only medicine that can defeat a hemophilic bacillus (which leads to meningitis and pneumonia).
Azithromycin easily penetrates and accumulates in sputum and tissues of the lungs, bronchi, skin and urinary organs. Its concentration in the tissues is 10-50 times higher than in the blood, so it acts directly on the "epicenter" of inflammation. The principle of operation of this antibiotic is that it does not allow cells of pathogens to synthesize proteins, and without this they cannot exist.
The highest concentration in the body reaches the drug in 2-3 hours after administration. It is also distinguished by delayed elimination: it leaves the child’s body for 35-55 hours. That is why this antibiotic can be taken only once a day.
What is very important, Azithromycin is suitable for the treatment of children with allergies and asthma.
When is the medicine prescribed?
Most often, this drug is prescribed to children with respiratory diseases, but not only. Indications for its use are:
- pneumonia caused by mycoplasma and chlamydia;
- complicated pneumonia;
- dermatological diseases - pustular lesions, erysipelas, impetigo, furunculosis;
- tick-borne borreliosis;
- peptic ulcer disease.
How to prepare the suspension?
Although the drug is available in tablets and in the form of solutions for injections, such forms are suitable only for adults, because the content of the active substance in them is too high for the child. The best option for taking Azithromycin for children is a suspension. It can be used from 6 months to 12 years.
In 5 g of the suspension is 125 mg azithromycin.
In the pharmacy, the medicine is sold as a white powder. It is available in two versions: at a dose of 100 (for children weighing more than 5 kg) and 200 mg (for children whose weight exceeds 15 kg) of azithromycin per 5 ml of suspension (20 ml and 30 ml bottles).
It is necessary to breed it at home. In the package with the drug there is a special calibrated syringe with graduations of 2.5 and 5 ml. To prepare 35 ml of the liquid solution, you should add 14.5 ml of distilled water to the contents of the bottle (30 ml, 1200 mg of azithromycin) and shake well until a homogeneous solution is obtained. Its amount will be 5 ml more than required. This stock is needed to compensate for the loss of medication that inevitably occurs when taking it. To get 25 ml of suspension (100 mg / 5 ml), it is enough to add 11 ml of water.
The instructions for azithromycin suspension for children indicate that, as soon as the child drinks the medicine, he should be given some tea or juice in order to wash off the remnants of the drug in the mouth.
Freshly prepared mixture can be stored for 5 days, after which it is not recommended to use it. Before each use the bottle should be well shaken.
How much to give an antibiotic?
In what doses is Azithromycin usually prescribed for children? The dosage is selected by the doctor depending on the age of the patient. At the same time, he focuses on this scheme:
- Babies from 6 months to a year - 5 mg of medicine for each kg of weight. Drink once a day for 3 days;
- babies from one year to three years old - 10 mg of Azithromycin per 1 kg of body weight per dose. Treatment for 3 days;
- children from 4 to 12 years old with 15 mg of suspension per kilogram of weight according to the same scheme - 1 p. per day 3 days.
Calculate the dose for your child is simple: it’s enough to know his weight. Let's give an example: a baby weighs about 13 kg a year and 5 months. Multiply by 10. It turns out that he needs 130 mg of the drug per day. Drink it should be 2 hours before or after meals.
Azithromycin in suspension for children, according to the instructions for use, can be given 3 days in a row or on the first day 10 mg / kg, and then another 3-4 days at 5-10 mg / kg. Heading dose - 30 mg / kg.
Included with the medicine is a measuring spoon with graduations of 2.5 and 5 ml, with which you can easily measure the required amount. The child may not like the taste: a sugary-sweet suspension with bitterness.
It is forbidden to give this antibiotic to infants up to 6 months, because the minimum dose at which it can have a destructive effect on bacteria is 5 ml. And this amount of Azithromycin can cause convulsions, intestinal and stomach bleeding in 5-10% of babies.
The drug is not suitable for children who have hypersensitivity to Azithromycin, Erythromycin and other macrolides. It can not be prescribed to patients who suffer from severe disorders in the kidneys, liver.
It is not recommended to combine the use of this drug with antacids, as this will adversely affect its effectiveness.
What can threaten a child taking the drug?
Practice has shown that allergic reactions to azithromycin in children are recorded extremely rarely. But what side effects are more common:
- increased anxiety, hyperactivity (or drowsiness), nervousness, weak dizziness;
- loose stools, bloating, nausea;
- spastic abdominal pain;
- a slight increase in liver enzymes in serum.
Azithromycin (this is confirmed by both parents and pediatricians) works very well, while its cost is quite affordable - 120 rubles. He comes to the rescue of various bacterial infections and helps to survive them without consequences. But he, like other antibiotics, cannot be recommended: he is appointed strictly according to indications and only by the attending physician!
