Do I need to remove atheroma and how to do it?

Do I need to remove atheroma and how to do it?

As soon as you find a sebaceous gland cyst on your head, it is better to remove it immediately. At the moment, the removal of atheroma is the only way to get rid of it forever.

Of course, atheroma is a benign neoplasm and does not carry in itself such danger as cancer. However, she can become infected at any time, which can lead to an abscess. During the period of acute inflammation, surgical intervention becomes vital, but it is not possible to remove atheroma at this point.

In this situation, in the operating room under local anesthesia, the cyst is opened, pus is removed from it, thoroughly washed and drained. Next, the patient is prescribed antibiotic therapy. 3 months after drainage, the atheroma must be removed, otherwise a relapse will occur rather quickly.

Atheroma is removed by two methods:

  • if the cyst size does not exceed 7 mm, the radio wave method is most often used. At the same time, under anesthesia, the capsule is opened and its fat content is completely removed. After such an intervention does not require special care;
  • Larger neoplasms are removed only by surgery. The patient is made a thin incision in the upper part of the tumor. Then it is released from the surrounding tissue, after which the contents are removed and sutures are applied, which will need to be removed 5-12 days after the operation. Within 24 hours after surgery, you will have to bandage the incision site with sterile gauze several times.

In the case of atheroma, you should not particularly get involved in self-treatment. Such a tumor can not change its size for many years and does not bother a sick person. Meanwhile, if you notice that the cyst has at least slightly increased, you should seek medical help in order to avoid serious consequences if possible.
