Sketchbook: what is it?

Sketchbook, translated from English, means "book for sketches." For a long time this subject was an indispensable attribute of artists and writers, but at present it is also used by representatives of other professions, one way or another connected with creativity. In such a kind of diary, you can sketch your ideas, finds and impressions, both with words and with the help of a drawing.

Photos, tickets, pictures and other memorabilia are glued in here. Many professional artists have several sketchbooks. Sketchuku come in different sizes and shapes: large - for conducting serious projects, and tiny - to write momentary ideas.

How to make a sketchbook with your own hands?

Before you start making a sketchbook, you should consider what functions it will perform: will it become a notebook for sketches or records, or maybe it will combine all these functions in itself? It all depends on your ideas and imagination. First you need to prepare and think through the following things:

  1. The size and shape of the sketchbook. What matters here is where you will use it and how often.
  2. Format suitable for your tasks (rectangular, square or others)
  3. Paper. It can be not only different in color, texture, but also in thickness, lined or pure.
  4. Cardboard for bookend
  5. Fabric or leather.
  6. Needle and thread (better silk).
  7. Glue (in the process it is desirable to use a different glue: a pencil, a moment or silicone).
  8. Ruler and pencil.
  9. Scissors.
  10. Gauze or bandage.
  11. Foam rubber or synthetic winterizer.
  12. Thick cardboard for binding or tablet (if you want to make the front and back of the cover of different materials).
  13. Additional decorations for your taste.

If you look at the book binding from the inside, you can see that the sheets are sewn together in small blocks. All this design is easy to repeat, it requires only patience and accuracy.

Let's start with the main part - the paper block. To do this, you need to sew the sheets in small notebooks. First you need to bend the sheets in half, and then put them together, joining at the folds. Make sure that the edges of the paper match, but do not bend more than 3 sheets at a time so that they can be pierced more easily. The number of notebooks will depend on how thick the notebook you want to make.

Next, on the folds of the notebooks you need to make 5 holes. It is important that they are located exactly on all notebooks, so pre-mark the points of the holes with a pencil, while using a ruler.

Now let's proceed to the most important stage of work - sheet stapling. Let's start with the extreme hole. We insert into it a needle with a thread, then we bring it outside, and then we pass the needle into the hole of the neighboring notebook. Now again we take the needle out, but through the next puncture. Then you must pass the thread inside the 1st notebook, but at the same time you need to bring the needle out through the same hole, hooking the thread stretched inside the book along the way. The rest of the sew in the same way, grabbing a needle stretched in the neighborhood of the thread. In order to fasten the notebooks to each other, we pull the thread out and hook the loop of another notebook with a loop. Then you need to thread the needle through the hole inside the book. As a result, the seam should resemble a pigtail.

Now let's cover. First we glue the back of the notebook with gauze, and then from the thickest cardboard cut out 2 large rectangles (in the form of sheets) and 1 narrow (to close the spine). Before you cut, do not forget to leave allowances. Further, pieces of cardboard can be wrapped in fabric or leather, making a layer of foam rubber or padding polyester (optional). Then sew the corners of the fabric and turn up nicely. The edges of the coating can be glued to the cardboard blank, then close them with fly-leaf from decorative paper.

Before connecting the block of sheets to the cover, it is possible to glue a gum-clip or a tape for bookmarks between them.

You can choose the easier way and make a sketchbook on the brackets. Sew such an album is not necessary. All you need to do is make holes in the paper with a hole punch. The cover is made in the same way. The advantage of this notebook is that, if necessary, you can add new sheets or replace them.

With your sketchbook you can add clasps, pockets, bookmarks and more. You can use any materials and design your own design, showing your personality. This is the advantage of the handmade sketchbook over the purchased notebooks.
